Why tape your mouth at night?

Because your nose does it better.

Sleep with your mouth open and you'll often wake with a dry mouth, a scratchy throat and a partner who's heard every snore. Your nose is built for the night shift: it filters, warms and moistens each breath before it reaches your lungs.

A small strip of gentle tape keeps your lips together, so your nose can get on with it. And it peels off in a second whenever you need it to.

Nose breathing

One small habit. Six good reasons.

Your nose is built to do the breathing while you sleep. It filters, warms and moistens every breath. Keep your lips closed, and it gets on with the job.

Filtered air, a moist mouth, quieter nights and fresher mornings.

No pills, no gadgets. Thirty seconds at bedtime.

  1. Filters the air Tiny hairs in your nose trap dust and pollen before they reach your lungs.
  2. Warms and moistens Your nose takes the chill and dryness out of every breath.
  3. Quieter nights In a 2022 pilot study, 13 of 20 mouth-breathers snored at least 50% less with tape.
  4. No more dry mouth Lips closed means no sandpaper throat at 3am.
  5. Less acidic mouth Nose breathers' mouths stayed near neutral overnight in an Otago study.
  6. Fresher mornings Wake up without that dry, stale-mouth feeling.

The evidence

What the research says.

Mouth taping is simple, and the research is still early. Here's what's been found so far, in plain English.

13 of 20snored at least 50% less

Mouth taping cut snoring for most

In a small 2022 pilot study, 20 adults who breathed through their mouths at night slept with gentle hypoallergenic tape over their lips. Thirteen of them cut their snoring by half or more. Everyone in the study had mild sleep apnoea.

6.6 vs 7.0average pH, mouth vs nose breathing

Mouth breathing made mouths more acidic

University of Otago researchers tracked the mouths of 10 healthy volunteers overnight. Made to breathe through their mouths, average pH fell to 6.6, against a neutral 7.0 through the nose, and at times dropped to 3.6. Tooth enamel starts to break down below 5.5.

These findings are about nasal breathing, mouth taping and nasal strips in general. They aren't tests of our products, and the NHS and the researchers don't endorse any brand. Mouth tape isn't a treatment for sleep apnoea: if you snore loudly, stop breathing in your sleep or feel exhausted during the day, see your GP.

The guide

Mouth tape for sleeping, explained

Mouth tape, also called sleep tape or mouth strips, is a small strip of soft, skin-safe tape that holds your lips gently together while you sleep. Your mouth stays closed, so you breathe through your nose instead, the way your body is built to at night.

Why tape your mouth at night?

Breathing through your mouth all night often means a dry mouth, a scratchy throat and, for many people, snoring. Your nose filters, warms and moistens each breath. In a University of Otago study, mouths stayed close to neutral overnight when people breathed through their noses, and became more acidic when they had to breathe through their mouths. See the research.

Mouth tape for snoring

It can if you snore because your mouth falls open. In a small 2022 study of 20 adults who breathed through their mouths at night, 13 snored at least 50% less with tape over their lips. If your nose feels blocked, add nasal strips so breathing through it feels easy.

Beard-friendly mouth tape

Facial hair can stop ordinary tape from sticking. Ours is beard friendly: it's designed to grip stubble and beards, so it stays put all night. Trim the hair right around your lips, make sure your lips and beard are dry, then press the tape down for a few seconds. Read our guide to beard-friendly mouth tape.

How to use mouth tape

Make sure your lips are clean and dry, peel off the backing and place the tape over relaxed, closed lips. In the morning, peel it off slowly from one side. Most people need a few nights to get used to it.

Mouth tape and CPAP

Our tape works alongside CPAP masks. If you use CPAP, check with your sleep clinic before you add mouth tape.

FAQ

Good questions.

Still have a question?

We reply within one working day.

support@nasalstrip.uk
Does mouth tape help with snoring?

If your snoring comes from breathing through your mouth, it can help. Keeping your lips gently closed encourages you to breathe through your nose, which for many people is a lot quieter.

Will I still be able to breathe?

Yes. You breathe through your nose as normal, and the tape peels off easily whenever you need it to. Don't use mouth tape if you're bunged up or feeling unwell.

Is this mouth tape beard friendly?

Yes. It's beard friendly: designed to grip stubble and beards and stay put all night. For the best hold, keep the hair right around your lips trimmed and dry, and press the tape down for a few seconds after you put it on.

Is it safe?

Our mouth tape is hypoallergenic, latex-free and CE and RoHS certified. Only use it if you can breathe comfortably through your nose: never when your nose is blocked, when you feel unwell, or on children. A 2025 review of 10 studies found the evidence on mouth taping is still limited, and warned it can be risky if your nose is blocked. If you have sleep apnoea or another medical condition, check with your GP first.

What if I'm still snoring?

Give it a week, as most people need a few nights to get used to it. If your nose feels blocked, add our nasal strips. If you're still snoring after that, it's worth a chat with your GP, as snoring can have other causes.

How many tapes are in a pack?

30 tapes, a month's supply. Each tape is for one night. Bundles save up to 50%, and 3 + 2 FREE and 6 + 6 FREE come with free UK delivery.

When will it arrive?

Order by 2pm on a weekday and we'll dispatch it the same day from the UK. Tracked delivery usually takes 2–4 working days, and it's free on orders over £25.

What if it's not for me?

Give it 30 nights. If you're not sleeping better, email support@nasalstrip.uk within 30 days of your order and we'll sort out a refund or exchange.
