When a blocked nose is behind the snoring
The NHS snoring page lists strips or nasal dilators that hold your nose open while you sleep as a treatment for snoring caused by a blocked or narrow nose.
The science
Mouth tape keeps your lips gently together while you sleep, so you breathe through your nose. Nasal strips lift the sides of your nose to open up the airways. Together they can help reduce snoring and dry mouth, for quieter, more restful nights.
Nose breathing
Your nose is built to do the breathing while you sleep. It filters, warms and moistens every breath. Keep your lips closed, and it gets on with the job.
Filtered air, a moist mouth, quieter nights and fresher mornings.
No pills, no gadgets. Thirty seconds at bedtime.

The evidence

Using acoustic rhinometry, which maps the inside of the nose with sound waves, researchers found a nasal dilator strip widened the nasal valve, the narrowest point of the airway, from 0.52 to 0.77 cm² across 32 nasal passages.

In a small 2022 pilot study, 20 adults who breathed through their mouths at night slept with gentle hypoallergenic tape over their lips. Thirteen of them cut their snoring by half or more. Everyone in the study had mild sleep apnoea.
University of Otago researchers tracked the mouths of 10 healthy volunteers overnight. Made to breathe through their mouths, average pH fell to 6.6, against a neutral 7.0 through the nose, and at times dropped to 3.6. Tooth enamel starts to break down below 5.5.

A 2025 systematic review looked at 10 studies with 213 people in total. Two found improvements in sleep apnoea measures; the others found no clear difference. The authors warned that taping your mouth could be dangerous if your nose is blocked. That's why we say: only use mouth tape if you can breathe comfortably through your nose, and add a nasal strip if it feels stuffy.
These findings are about nasal breathing, mouth taping and nasal strips in general. They aren't tests of our products, and the NHS and the researchers don't endorse any brand. Mouth tape isn't a treatment for sleep apnoea: if you snore loudly, stop breathing in your sleep or feel exhausted during the day, see your GP.
Why it matters
Breathing through your mouth at night leaves you with a mouth like sandpaper, often comes with snoring, and can leave you waking up anything but refreshed. Keeping your lips gently closed and your nose open encourages the slow, steady nose breathing your body is built for.
